Introduction

Do you remember the two big groups in which animals are divided? Well, if you don’t remember I will tell you, the groups are vertebrates and invertebrates.

In this unit we are going to concentrate on the vertebrates animals.

You are going to become in different animals for a couple of days, in order to know how every group of vertebrates animals live and what their main characteristics are.

All of you have to investigate and look for information about the different groups in which vertebrates are divided, and their main characteristics.

Task

The class is going to be divided in 5 different groups, and each group has to use the webs provided, or if they want to, they can use books and everything they have to find out the information needed.

First, they have to prepare a colourful, eye-catching mural with more photos than long texts. The idea is to hang up all the murals in the walls of the class, so they can review this topic with a simple quick look.

Second, they have to create a short performance in order to show the rest of the class what they have found about their topic, explaining clearly the main characteristics of their animal group.

If some groups want to present their murals in projectors, they can.

Process

I will provide you this diagram so you have the general view of how vertebrates are divided

To do this work you have to follow the following steps:

  1. You will be divided into 5 groups with 4 persons in each group.
  2. These five groups will be: MAMMALS, BIRDS, REPTILES, FISH AND AMPHIBIANS.
  3. In each group, they will acquire 4 different roles:

·         One student will look for information about the group of animal in general and its characteristics.

·         The rest of students in the group (three) will take the role of three different animals which belong to the group, for example the three students in the mammals group could be a cat, a monkey and a dog.

  1. Up to this point, you will have to start preparing your mural. As it was mentioned before, it has to be colourful and eye-watching.
  2. Finally, each group has to prepare a short performance in which you show in a clear way what you have found out about your group of animals.

The idea is that one of you introduces your group of animal with its main characteristics.

Then, each one from the group has to perform an example of animal, saying its particular characteristics.

It would be very funny if you can disguise like the animal you represent or you cover your face with a mask.

These are WebPages where you can get information from to prepare your task. They are clearly divided into groups, so each group can go directly to its page, there are pages in Spanish and in English for each group. You can look for more information in other pages, encyclopaedias or books if you want to.

You have to use the following questions as a guide, but you can add more information if you can. (Where there is a _________, you have to think in the group you have to work in, for example, fish).

1.        How are ___________?

2.       Where do ___________ live?

3.       Special characteristics.

4.       How do __________ reproduce?

5.       Examples with their characteristics.

Conclusion

Students have to hand in the work the same day, soy they can’t modify anything after seeing other groups’ work.

We hope that students learn the groups in which vertebrates are divided into, and their main characteristics. To make sure they can have a quick look everyday, we are going to hang all the murals in the walls of the class.

Guía para el profesor

Indique el área o áreas en las que se puede trabajar con la webquest diseñada.
For 5º or even 6º Primary.
The main objectives we want to reach are that students learn the main characteristics of vertebrates and its different groups and that student spend a good time and enjoy doing the activity.
As we know, this is a topic that primary students have to learn and be familiar with, so we include this activity in the unit about animals.
We will give students two weeks working in class during the lessons of Conocimiento del Medio; they can also work at home.
